About Department: Department of Anesthesiology is major surgical allied department that renders services in critical care, pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative monitoring.  The department is equipped with state of art operation theatre complex that houses 11 spacious, full-fledged operation theatres with ultramodern facilities such as latest anaesthesia machines, ventilators, invasive blood pressure/CVP monitoring device, ultrasonography for regional blocks and C-arm. The highlight of theatre complex is newly developed Cath-lab which is headed by experienced cardiologist for cardiac interventions like angiography, angioplasty and bypass surgery. Fertility centre located at III floor with separate operation theatre caters to procedures such as oocyte retrieval, hysterosalpingography and artificial insemination.

Dr. T. Devarajan, renowned old -time anaesthetist and an excellent post-graduate teacher was the first head of department who marched towards the vision & mission.  Dr. Sufala Sunil Vishwasrao was the successor of Dr. T. Devarajan under whose period dept. of Anaesthesia reached its significant level. Presently the department is headed by Dr. R. Subramaniya Bharathiyar -a down to earth person, well experienced anaesthetist who has received many awards for his relentless effort towards the community. He offered medical attention to the people during Kerala Floods in 2019.

The department has necessary equipments, teaching learning facilities as per MCI norms and has demonstration room, preoperative check-up (POC) clinic, post-anaesthesia recovery room, pain clinic, fully equipped spacious operation theatres and simulated Skill lab. Dr Mu Rajaram trained for instructor course is Head of Skill Lab. Students are sent to skill lab during their practical hours to learn the skills. The Department conducts regular courses like Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) not only for the students but also for teaching, and non-teaching staff.

The department has established pain clinic with necessary equipments in new OP complex. Patients suffering from acute and chronic pain are referred in this clinic on every Tuesday and Friday in between 9 am to 12 pm.

With a glance at the displayed posters depicting history of Anaesthesia, student’s relish leisure walks through the department corridor. The Demonstration hall is well equipped with audio-visual aids. Students can see the live demonstration of operative procedures and also can communicate with the Surgeon for their queries at the same time.

Department promotes students’ participatory activities by organizing CME and workshops regularly. Every year department celebrates World Anaesthesia day by arranging CME program to update the knowledge of the students. 

Department deals with Training MBBS interns about the essentials of anaesthesia, training necessary skills through simulation lab, and training of B. Sc. OT & AT (Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Technician) students.
