Awareness on Blood and Organ Donation

Introduction

Blood donation occurs when a person voluntarily has blood drawn and used for transfusions and/or made into biopharmaceutical medications.

Organ donation is the process when a person allows an organ of their own to be removed and transplanted to another person, legally, either by consent while the donor is alive or dead with the assent of the next of kin.

Why are blood and organ donation the need of the hour?

Why blood donation?

  • Every year our nation requires about 5 crore units of blood, out of which only a meagre 2.5 crore units of blood are available.
  • Every two seconds someone needs blood.
  • One unit of life can help save three people’s lives.

Why organ donation?

  • Nearly 500,000 people die because of the non-availability of organs every year
  • One organ donor can donate up to twenty five different organs and tissues for transplantation.
