Department of Community Medicine

In contributing to achieve the National goal of “Health for all”, the department of community medicine imparts community oriented teaching for MBBS students so as to produce competent “Physicians of First Contact” and also a skilled and motivated basic doctor.
Field practice areas for the MBBS Students, have been developed in the Pulipakkam village and Anna nagar, Chengalpattu, where the Rural Health Training centre and Urban Health Training centre are functioning, respectively.
The Rural Health Training centre in Pulipakkam village has accommodation facilities for the students, resident doctor and the staff nurse with mess facility, in order to provide round the clock service for the local population.

The following activities are carried out in each of the centres,

1. Health education about the prevailing health problems in the form of demonstration, street plays and role play involving the MBBS students, faculties in the department of community medicine and Staffs the concerned centres, is being done periodically.
2. Outpatient department to provide routine consultation and treatment
3. Free Basic laboratory investigations
4. Provision of free medications.
5. Periodic speciality clinics viz. Antenatal OP, Immunization clinic and ophthalmology
6. Referral services to the Karpaga Vinayaga Hospital through free transportation.

Facilities available in the department of Community Medicine
1. Public Health laboratory including all the entomology specimens, slides and Public Health instruments like Horrock’s Apparatus, Chloroscope etc.,
2. Well established Public Health Museum with the relevant charts for almost every topic of Public Health interest and Models & specimens for relevant communicable and non-communicable diseases
3. Library with all the needed books for undergraduate medical students and reference books
4. Demonstration room with Audio-visual aids for those students posted in the department of community medicine
5. Statistical consultation and guidance are provided for all types of research activities and project works, by a qualified Assistant professor in Biostatistics.


Activities in the department of Community medicine – so far
1. World Breast feeding week was celebrated on 6.8.2010 in The Rural Health Training centre in Pulipakkam village involving mothers having children aged between 0 – 24 months, in order to create awareness about the importance of breast feeding to the village mothers and the participant children were given prizes and gift of participation. Our Dean Dr.A.R.Chakravarthy MD.,DGO., who has been the Task force member in BPNI, was the chief guest on the celebration and distributed the prizes to the children.
2. The Department of Community Medicine observed World AIDS Day on 1st Dec 2010 and also a seminar on HIV/AIDS was conducted involving the 1st and 2nd MBBS students.
3. The World Health Day was celebrated by the Department of Community Medicine in the way of conducting a CME on 21.4.2011, the theme of which, being the “ Antimicrobial Resistance and its Global Spread”. The Deputy Director of Health services, Kanchipuram HUD, Dr.S.Bavani Umadevi MBBS., DPH., MBA., was the chief guest on the occasion.
